A knife gate valve should not automatically replace a resilient seated waterworks gate valve. The two products are designed around different service conditions and pressure ranges.

Before quotation, provide the mating pipe OD and coupling or connection requirement.

Ductile Iron Knife Gate Valve

For mining slurry, wastewater containing solids or other media where solids handling is the main selection issue, a knife gate valve may be more appropriate than a conventional resilient seated gate valve.

Select Stem, Seat and Material Configuration

Rising vs Non-Rising Stem

A non-rising stem keeps the operating height relatively compact because the stem does not travel upward as the valve opens. It is commonly considered where vertical space is limited or the valve is installed in an underground network.

A rising stem provides a visible indication of valve position but requires additional clearance above the valve.

EPDM, NBR or Metal-Seated Wedge

Solid Valve's published gate valve options include ductile iron wedges with EPDM or NBR and metal-seated configurations.

Selection should be based on the actual medium and operating conditions.

EPDM is commonly considered for water service, while NBR may be selected where its fluid compatibility is more appropriate. A metal-seated design serves a different sealing requirement and should not be treated as an automatic substitute for a resilient-seated valve.

Provide the medium, operating temperature and project leakage or shut-off requirement before final material selection.

Stem and Fastener Materials

Where Each Gate Valve Configuration Fits

Municipal and Water Distribution Networks

Resilient seated flanged, socket or spigot gate valves are used as isolation valves in water-distribution systems because the valve is intended to operate fully open or fully closed.

For South African waterworks procurement, confirm the required valve standard, flange or pipe connection, PN class, closing direction and operator before selection.

Water and Wastewater Treatment

In treatment plants, access for maintenance and compatibility with existing flanged pipework often make the connection standard and face-to-face dimension important.

Where the wastewater contains significant solids or fibrous material, do not assume a standard resilient seated water valve is suitable. Provide the solids condition so that a conventional gate valve and a knife gate valve can be evaluated separately.
